New rebates for battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles announced.

24 June, 2021

The government has announced a discount in the form of new rebates for battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) will start on July 1, 2021. The Clean Car discount will make it more affordable for kiwis to own their own Electric Vehicle, the Clean Car Discount will be providing rebates for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles for cars registered between 1st July and 31st March 2022. Rebates include up to $8,625 for new vehicles and $3,450 for used vehicles*.

Waka Kotahi will administer the Clean Car Discount scheme and will issue rebates and collect fees directly with the vehicle purchaser, not vehicle dealers. It will issue rebates for eligible battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles first registered on or after 1 July 2021. Vehicles ordered or bought prior to July can still receive a rebate if buyers delay registering the vehicle to 1st July 2021.

Subject to legislation being passed, the clean car discount programme will consist of rebates and fees for imported new and used vehicles based emission CO2 ratings from 2022.

Transport Minister Michael Wood expresses the work they have been doing to ensure Kiwis have the confidence to go electric, with chargers for electric vehicles now on average are only 75km along most state highways.
